A 5.7-magnitude earthquake near Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Friday morning triggered noticeable tremors across Eastern India.
The quake struck around 10:10 AM IST, prompting people in multiple districts of West Bengal, including major urban areas, to rush outdoors as buildings and objects vibrated for several seconds.

Eyewitnesses reported shaking furniture, swinging ceiling fans and mild panic as people evacuated residential buildings and workplaces. The tremors were also experienced across the wider eastern region, highlighting the significant reach of the seismic event.
So far, no major structural damage or casualties have been reported, according to initial monitoring. Authorities in Eastern India are currently evaluating the situation and urging residents to remain alert but calm.
Experts note that Eastern India falls under a high seismic sensitivity belt, making it prone to earthquakes originating in neighboring regions such as Bangladesh and Nepal. The incident once again underscores the need for earthquake-ready infrastructure, periodic mock drills and public awareness measures for disaster preparedness.
Government agencies and the National Centre for Seismology are continuing to monitor for potential aftershocks. Further updates are expected as assessment reports arrive from various districts.
