A fresh controversy has erupted in Tripura’s political landscape as Ramchandraghat MLA Ranjit Debbarma of the Tipra Motha party has raised serious allegations of corruption and nepotism in the recent police constable recruitment process. In a formal letter addressed to Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Debbarma has demanded an immediate, transparent, and impartial investigation into the matter.

The allegations center around the appointment of a female constable, Anamika Debbarma, who, according to the MLA, secured her position using a forged Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate. Ranjit Debbarma claims that Anamika’s father belongs to the General category, and only her mother has ST status. Despite this, Anamika was allegedly issued an ST certificate — which he terms as “fraudulent” — and used it to unlawfully claim eligibility under the reserved quota for tribal candidates.

In his letter, Debbarma expressed deep concern that such malpractice undermines the integrity of the recruitment process and robs genuinely eligible tribal youth of their rightful opportunities. He further alleged that this is not an isolated incident but part of a wider nexus of corruption involving senior administrative officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and members of the recruitment board.

This is not just about one candidate,” Debbarma wrote. “This is a systemic failure, possibly facilitated either actively or passively by top officials, which needs to be investigated thoroughly.”The issue gained further momentum after the MLA publicly shared his concerns and the letter on social media, triggering strong reactions from both the public and political circles. Many have voiced support for Debbarma’s demand for accountability, while others have called for legal action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities

The controversy has brought the spotlight back on the state’s reservation policies, especially concerning the verification and issuance of caste certificates. Questions are now being raised about the screening process and how such alleged fraud could pass undetected during the recruitment.

In his communication to the Chief Minister, Debbarma has specifically urged the government to:

  • Launch a neutral and high-level inquiry into the recruitment process.

  • Suspend or remove any officials found complicit in the irregularities.

  • Ensure stringent verification of caste certificates in all future recruitments.

  • Take legal action against candidates who have benefited through fraudulent means.

As the pressure mounts, all eyes are now on the Chief Minister’s Office and how the administration responds. While there has been no official response from the state government at the time of writing, political observers believe that the issue is unlikely to die down soon, especially with Durga Puja and upcoming civic body elections around the corner.

This incident has also reignited conversations around tribal rights, youth unemployment, and transparency in public recruitment, all of which are sensitive and politically charged issues in Tripura’s current landscape.

Whether the government acts swiftly and decisively, or attempts to downplay the issue, remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the public and opposition are watching closely.
